Brighton College seeks to appoint a Deputy Director of Development and Engagement, who will play a pivotal role in devising and implementing the strategic advance of its fundraising and engagement programmes.

This is an exciting position within the Development and Engagement office at United Kingdom’s leading co-educational independent school. You will be joining the team at a pivotal time, as we raise funds for a £35 million performing arts centre and a transformative free-places programme for local young people with lived experience of disadvantage and displacement.

The role would suit an enthusiastic and creative person who has significant experience in a management/supervisory role within a fundraising/events/membership/marketing environment. Working as part of a dynamic team, the successful applicant will work closely with the Director of Development and Engagement to oversee a sector-leading programme of campaigns, communications and events.


  • Working with the Director of Development and Engagement to develop and implement short, medium and long-term strategic targets for fundraising and alumni and parent engagement
  • Setting and managing key KPIs for engagement, and producing periodic analysis and reports of activity


  • Raising funds in support of the school’s key strategic fundraising priorities
  • Managing fundraising appeals and projects aimed at the wider parent and alumni communities.
  • Managing a portfolio of alumni and parent prospective supporters, involving the Director of Development and Engagement as appropriate
  • Ensuring that all donors are appropriately thanked and acknowledged, providing a high level of donor stewardship, including devising stewardship events where appropriate
  • Implementing the school’s legacy fundraising strategy and overseeing the acquisition and stewardship of legacy pledgers (1845 Society)
  • Overseeing the work of Development Officer (Operations and Projects) in the management of key funded the awards and prizes
  • Working with the Development Officer (Major Gifts and Stewardship) to produce funding applications to trusts and foundations in support of the school’s strategic projects

Alumni Engagement

  • Responsibility for the school’s alumni engagement programme, The Old Brightonians
  • Building strategic relationships with a wide range of Brighton College alumni
  • Working with Brighton College International Schools to integrate overseas schools’ leavers in to the Old Brightonian network
  • Responding to alumni enquires (face to face, telephone, email, online) and accompanying Old Brightonians on their visits to the college
  • Ensuring alumni database records are kept accurate and complete using a variety of methods (e.g. data capture, surveys, projects (e.g. alumni directory), correspondence, website, postal returns, etc.)
  • Engaging graduating pupils and educating them about the benefits of the alumni network
  • Developing and implementing a formalised alumni volunteering strategy, maximising participation and developing the network
  • Fostering a close working relationship with the volunteer President of the Old Brightonian community, and working with them to recruit and engage key alumni volunteers
  • Working with the Sixth Form team to plan the growth and accessibility of career networking services for pupils and alumni
  • Overseeing the work of the Engagement Officer in sourcing and arranging volunteering opportunities

Parent Engagement

  • Responsibility for the school’s parent engagement programme, The Brighton College Society (BCS)
  • Managing membership acquisition and retention processes, supported by the Engagement Officer
  • Recruiting parent and alumni volunteers to host events for BCS

Development and Engagement Events

  • Planning and managing the events programme (approx. c.45 events a year) for alumni, parents and College supporters to provide a range of opportunities that are tailored to encourage wider participation among our school community.
  • Managing the Engagement Officer in the execution of our parent, alumni and fundraising event programme.
  • Working with colleagues to manage the administrative aspects of events, to include invitations, guest administration, dealing with enquiries, bookings, guest lists and seating plans
  • Organising overseas alumni and fundraising events, working with volunteer alumni ambassadors, both supporting existing annual events and exploring opportunities for additional activity.
  • Representing the school at Old Brightonian and Brighton College Society events, using them as an opportunity to deepen relationships with alumni and parents

Other Events

  • Managing the Head Master’s Conferences which take place at the College.


  • Developing a programme of rich content for online and offline platforms which engages the breadth of our alumni and parent community, and communicates the school’s ethos and strategic priorities
  • Devising and maintaining regular scheduled communication with alumni and parents via direct contact, email newsletters and social media channels (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn) as well as developing the use of the school’s online networking platform, Brighton College Connect.
  • Working with third-party suppliers to ensure that the OB website is kept up to date with news, events and other relevant information

Office Management

  • Having day-to-day responsibility for the smooth operational running of the Development and Engagement Office.
  • Overseeing the Development Officer (Operations and Projects) to ensure all data and records processes are efficient and compliant


  • Managing the College Archivist in the management and development of our historic collection
  • Supporting the Archivist in embedding the College collection in to school-life as a source for research, pupil volunteering and other projects
  • Expanding the use of the Archives as an engagement tool within the alumni community

Other duties

  • Deputising for the Director of Director of Development and Engagement, both internally and externally at key school events.
  • Line managing the Engagement Officer and Archivist and supervising the Development Officers in the absence of the Director of Development and Engagement.
  • Responsibility for the management of the annual program budget for Alumni and Parent Engagement
  • Other tasks to be specified that are associated with the varied nature of this role.


  • 2 years+ managerial/supervisory experience within a fundraising/ events/marketing/ membership environment, ideally within the education sector
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the confidence and ability to build strategic working relationships with stakeholders at all levels
  • Confidence and willingness to speak publicly at events
  • A creative approach to content generation, good eye for design and experience of writing high quality copy for online and offline platforms
  • Confident user of social media platforms and knowledge of how to use them to harness the engagement of a community
  • Passion for, and extensive experience of, large event management (100+ people).
  • Strong numeracy, analytical and interpretative skills using IT competently
  • Be self-disciplined and motivated
  • Have excellent time management skills and a demonstrable ability to multitask.
  • A flexible and supportive team player
  • Willing to work evenings and weekends at school events (around 45 events a year with time given in lieu)
  • Be enthused by developing an understanding of independent schooling and its marketplace
