BAE Systems Platforms and Services is hiring a Director of Manufacturing Operations to support the Combat Mission Systems (CMS) business area. This $2.5B, 5,500 people business provides weapons systems and combat vehicles for the United States Navy, Army, and Marine Corps as well as international partners from around the world. The location for this onsite leadership position is in Louisville, KY where naval gun systems, submarine launchers, and propulsion systems are produced. This role may require up to 15% of travel domestically.
The Director of Manufacturing Operations will provide leadership to the Operations organization in the development and accomplishment of business goals. This position will provide motivation, coaching, and leadership to team members to ensure the accomplishment of business objectives including cost, quality, inventory, and delivery commitments. The role will be responsible for creation and maintenance of an effective and efficient organization and the communication of responsibilities and objectives to employees. In pursuit of these objectives this individual must foster an organization that is responsive, Lean, and agile; select and train personnel to fulfill position requirements; work effectively and in concert with customers, suppliers, and the Program Management and Engineering organizations; and ensure that the team meets commitments and continually improves to achieve customer and business needs. The role reports to the VP of Operations of Combat Mission Systems and the VP/GM of the Weapon Systems product area.
Responsibilities:
- Effectively manage, coach, and lead a widely diverse and multi-functional organization
- Develop, through leadership of direct reports, a world-class and work-teaming environment among direct reports
- Lead with a customer and mission-focused mindset and instill this mindset throughout the organization
- Mentor, motivate, and coach teams to a higher level of excellence
- Foster a culture of collaboration, partnership, and continuous improvement to align site objectives with organizational goals and mission
- Establish and communicate business goals, prioritize competing demands, and effectively allocate resources to deliver superior performance
- Mature Operations team capabilities to execute effective performance enhancing techniques such as, lean manufacturing, design for manufacturing, and six sigma improvement methods
- Manage expenditure of allocated resources to meet current and future business needs
- Identify necessary resources, including information, personnel (including technical support), and facilities to deliver on contract requirements
- Identify risks and opportunities of operational performance, leading mitigation plans and status reporting to stakeholders
- Interface with senior management, corporate-level managers, and high-ranking customers on all matters affecting the status of operations
- Drive positive change in an organizational culture
Requirements
Required Education, Experience, & Skills:
- Requires eligibility for minimum secret level clearance
- Related Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of work experience or HS Diploma and 16 years of work experience, or equivalent experience
- 12 years in a manufacturing industry, preferably within a large industrial, high precision machining environment, and highly regulated industry
- Broad discipline experience in a multi-plant manufacturing and supply chain environment
- Excellent leadership skills, both as a people manager and a transformational leader
- DCMA, DCAA, and or other similar regulatory experience
- Must possess the ability to establish rapport and working relationships at all levels of the organization and communicate effectively throughout
- Proven ability to navigate a complex business environment
- High tolerance for change and ambiguity
- Have a strong bias for action, can communicate vision clearly, and be a driver of change
- Have an agile leadership style; able to adjust one’s approach to fit the situation as a driver, coach, mentor, or teacher
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem solving skills
- Effective decision-making track record
- Willingness to travel domestically up to 15% of the time

- Graduate Degree
- Professional Certification
- Experience in large industrial, low volume, high precision, high complexity manufacturing and machining environment
- Experience in Defense (DoD) Contracting
- Experience in Union Manufacturing
- Experience in Change Management and Organizational Transformation
- Experience in Continuous Improvement including a Six Sigma certificate
- Ability to maintain a holistic view of site business operations to effectively optimize performance, integrate resources, and deliver excellence
- Ability to manage and ensure accountability among business operations
- Ability to collaborate with all levels of the organization to align business objectives and drive change
